  4. Marie says:

I can’t find a connection as such. Doing some Census searches for it. It was apparently a Polish Children’s Home and linked to the Scouts. I will keep looking.

https://archive.org/stream/historyofstmarys00hamiuoft/historyofstmarys00hamiuoft_djvu.txt then click Ctrl F and type Hawson. It might get us closer to what we want to know. Sir Francis Drake lived in Buckfastleigh Abbey in the 1500s.

  7. Brian SHEPPERD says:

Brian SHEPPERD on Saturday 12th. December 2015. Ellen Hawson married JAMES S H E P P E R D . ( I will correct the spelling of our name again like we have done all our lives ) I’m James —- great grandson . Came upon this page searching for history on my great great grandfather SAMUEL SHEPPERD stonmason born 1812. who landed at PT. LINCOLN about 1840. Did his ship come via Tasmania from ST. NEWFOUNDLAND CANADA or. Did he immigrate from around DEVON ENGLAND.? . I googled one short query and the internet spelt Samuel and my name different twice in the one sentence. Our name it,s claimed originated in 1400,s but there’s many ways to spell it . the bible spelling is SHEPHERD are the dozen other spellings just quill and ink human copying errors since 1400. I bought a family crest at a large shopping centre I was proud of the reproduction being only small in its black frame 8″ – 5″ . so when another genealogy company had a display I took my crest with me typed in my surname and the crest was different . When doing business transactions I will spell my surname to the persons behind the desk loud and V E R Y S L O W and when I check many a time they,be spelt it the way they see it in their head NOT the correct way. As do computers .

  8. eirenehogan says:

Thanks for your post, Brian, and welcome to another family member.

Thanks for pointing out the mis-spelling of the S h e p p e r d name as used in this site. I will make the changes.

I am actually connected to the Shepperd family via two lines, as each line married into the Shepperd family at different times. LOL, there were not many people living in Eyre Peninsula at the time. I did know the spelling of the name was as you spelt it, however I have seen it spelt differently in some UK sources. This particular family tree outline was actually prepared by someone else who does not have as strong a connection to the family.

You asked how Samuel Shepperd arrived in SA? On TROVE there is a wonderful obituary notice which lists his death – of course – and his birth and his arrival in SA. He came via the Duke of Bedford. I believe that came from the UK but do not know for sure. Here is a link to the TROVE article: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article207199545

As for the spelling of the name, I realise it could get irritating having to spell your name all the time, but for those who make the error it would be the first time for them. The common spelling of the name is as the noun, ie; ‘Shepherd’, so it is a very understandable mistake. I have to spell my name quite often too, and it is ‘Hogan’ (my married name), hardly an unusual spelling for that name. So … that’s life, eh? As I have an old fashioned given name I have to spell that all the time too.

Why the different spellings? Over the centuries names do change their spelling, for various reasons. The spelling of English itself changes over the centuries, so the spelling of names change too. Researching into family history will reveal these changes in spelling quite regularly. Over the centuries the same family will have different spellings for their name. A major cause for this is because until recent times most people were illiterate. Compulsory schooling did not come into Australia and Britain until the 1870s and 1880s. This meant the majority of people could not read or write. So when they had to fill in government forms such as birth, marriage and death certificates, or record their name in Parish registers, they did not know how to spell their own name, so the official who was filling in the form would have to do it. The further back you go into historical records, the more often you will see quite a lot of variations in the spelling of names. Some of the family names in my family history have a lot of quite bizarre spellings.

The fact that the word shepherd is spelt that way in the Bible doesn’t mean a lot, since the Bible was originally written in Greek and Aramaic, not English. The word comes from sheep+herder, and was originally spelt as ‘sceaphierde’ in old English. (http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=shepherd)

As for the crests; the various crests that are linked to families do vary. Different lines of the same family could have different crests, as the crests were actually awarded to an individual in the family by the King. That crest was then inherited down his line. Many people do make the mistake of assuming a crest belongs to just one family name, but it is not necessarily the case.

I do have a genealogy of the Shepperds from Samuel Shepperd down, if you would be interested in seeing it. I could send it to you via email. If you would like it you can contact me via email by clicking on the ‘about/contact’ link on the top navigation bar.
